As an academic he has worked extensively on various aspects of nation building in Israel. He has also undertaken major comparative projects on contemporary nationalism, populism and the relationships between politics and religion. He has authored seven books, edited ten, published more than eighty articles/chapters in journals and edited volumes.

He taught at various universities abroad (Geneva Graduate Institute, Université du Québec à Montréal, Tel Aviv University, London School of Economics, Columbia University…). He is international fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Royal Society of Canada. He is the co-director of the Observatoire international du religieux and the Chair for the Study of Religion, both at Sciences Po.
